Pivot

Despite the best laid plans, sometimes you get into a situation that feels a bit tight…a place where your movement is restricted and impeded. An uncomfortable position that requires you to re-evaluate the space around you, to be able to wiggle out of  a corner or carefully manoeuvre around obstacles, in order to ultimately keep moving forward.

You need to pivot.

The irony of it all is that right now I physically couldn’t pivot on my right foot for love, nor money.

But mentally, I am going to have to try.

The scene from Friends keeps playing on my mind…Ross overly enunciating the word “PIVOT” over and over again, his tone mounting each time – as if by saying it louder, it would become clearer – while Rachel and Chandler try to help him move an oversized couch up a small and twisting staircase.

Spoiler alert – for those who haven’t seen the episode – the move proved to be an impossible feat (despite Ross’ clear and specific guiding instructions lol) and the couch ends up being sawed in two.

Not the outcome I am hoping for personally…

My goal is to stay intact – while I may not be able to control the physical component, I am trying to find a way for my mind and soul to stay whole.

I have to make my mind pivot and readjust from its previous course. I need to take in the setting, read the room and recalculate the measures.

Pivoting is an interesting movement. It’s not a complete a turnaround or a 360o. A pivot is more subtle and calculated – a slight readjustment, or often multiple micro manoeuvres that eventually realign your trajectory.

So, as I digest what seemed like a redefining moment of who I am or who I have been for so many years now – I am battling my instinct to make this a U-turn. If I can’t do it exactly the same way as before, the way I want to do it, maybe I should throw up the white flag?

Or…

What if I could heed Ross’ instructions?

What if I could keep the couch intact AND get it safely home?

What if I CAN pivot…

Stay tuned for more pivotal updates,  as always, with Grit&Grace!

  1. oh! You will pivot & you will do it with Grit&Grace, you will do it with your mind & soul. Your mind, your soul, your mental & physical strength, your smarts and many other qualities will allow you to not have to saw the couch in half. A pivot is shorter than a 360* and a u-turn but much more technical & potentially more difficult. Oh! & I’m a true believer in speaking louder & louder … haha! for things to work or to be heard! 💚

  2. Thanks for sharing your pivoting perspective, Ruth. – No matter your rate of success – indeed, even if the sofa doesn’t get upstairs to the desired location… By doing your best, you will ultimately be the primary beneficiary of the exercise. True, we often use the final achievement as the measure of success, but in reality, regardless of the goal, your ultimate benefit is the experience of your journey. Love Dad ❤️
