I am reminded as of late of the importance of roots – and the fact that these lifelines even exist.
A tree’s roots provide it with water and nutrients allowing it to grow and bloom. A tree’s roots also anchor it to the ground, securing it firmly in place, so that it can stand tall, hold strong and resist the elements.
On the human side, roots are connections. They are intricate links between past, present and future.
Our roots connect us to our past, linking us with ancestors, some of whom we have never met. They provide us with physical features and character traits. They are also the source of family traditions and folklore. These customs may be so deeply rooted that it can often prove difficult to trace the instigator or the origins. These roots help us to relate to those who came before us and marvel in the feats of those who helped forge the way. Looking into these connections can help us understand where we come from and also offer us some inspiration and pride. These links show us the path from which we emerge.
Our roots are also important links our future, as we carry on traditions and pass on parts of our inner selves. These connections offer us comfort and familiarity. They can provide us with a sense of grounding. Our roots can offer us the stability and confidence to move forward, take risks and expand our wings as we move towards the horizon. They offer a safe cushion to land on when learning to fly. Roots ensure that the future generations will be graced with the knowledge of those who have walked before them. These links show the paths from which we have to choose as we go forward.
Our roots also help us to join the present moment – and to connect to each other. They offer us the promise of fellowship. As we lay the groundwork for our homebase, weaving connections together with those around us, our foundation becomes more solid. A sturdy base allows us to reach out to others and connect on new levels. These bridges with others can bring us to a deeper understanding of who we are – providing guidance in becoming the best version of ourselves in the here and now. These links shed light on the path we are on.
All these links are woven, sometimes imperceptibly, into the fabric of our daily lives – providing us with nourishment for the mind, body and soul. Every connection – no matter how new, small, withered or worn – can provide invaluable sustenance and stability, allowing for gratitude, grace and growth.
Building and becoming, as always, deeply rooted in #Grit&Grace.
